Chapter 23

A voice blared through my head, ruining what was supposed to be a very relaxing morning.

Perl, Sasha, and Vera all headed to the dungeon with our newest recruits at sunrise. Adam’s used it the day before to train some of his newer Nobles, and since our last visit was a bore, the girls only watching while I tanked for Fin and Will, they told me to stay home.

Not that I was complaining. It felt like ever since Zhinodev first arrived, I’d never stopped working. I could have spent the entire day in bed without disappointment.

But Sora had something else in mind, apparently. “Wyle! Your Core will spoil, you know, if you let it rot from disuse!” she called.

“What?” I mumbled, rolling out of bed. “That isn’t a thing… is it?”

“Hmph. You’ll never know!” she chimed as her wisp flew in through my cracked window. Some snowflakes piled up on the windowsill, so I brushed them off, pulled the shutters closed, and latched them. With a bed as crowded as mine, the nights could be very warm, but the winter grew colder with every setting sun.

Sora floated over my shoulder as I made my way downstairs to grab some food. “What do you want, anyway? Didn’t the girls tell you it’s my day off?”

She groaned. “Ugh, Rulers don’t get days off, Wyle! Besides, I’m not asking you to fight monsters or chop wood!”

“Then what are you asking me?”

“Just… for a little advice.”

My eyes widened as I paused halfway down the stairs. I whirled upon the dark blue wisp beside me. “I’m sorry, what? You need my advice? Since when!”

“Oh, very funny. Ha! Anyway, as you know, I’ve been expanding our Domain northward. We’re already connected to our Vassals, and I’ve been leveling lots, thanks to Sparkling Bays huge population.”

“Right. Do we need to start thinking about your next evolution? We need a true castle, right?”

“Well, yes, I reached level 40 and will progress slowly until we finish that castle, but that’s not what I came for. Besides, we’ll need a lot of stone for that and transporting huge blocks in the winter is an easy was to kill some Peasants. No, I just wanted to tell you that I’ve finally linked with Johnny’s dungeon…”

A smile spread across my face. If Sora had a body, I would have hugged her! “That’s fantastic! Now that your buff applies, we’ll get double the experience! Damn, I almost wish I’d gone with the dungeon group today. They must be ecstatic about how much experience they’re getting!”

“Oh, they are!” she said, though her voice clearly held a melancholy tone.

“…But? I feel like there’s a ‘but’ coming.”

“Psh. You wish. You always want more butts!”

I shot her a flat look, but given that I had four wives now, it was hard to deny.

After a moment, Sora reached her point. “…But! There is a bit of a problem. See, I linked to the dungeon overnight and some of the bonobos in the first hallway must have felt it happen.
